My journey along the curve

This is the end. I had given myself until today to grieve the ending of my last work role. But, having been a consummate change management practitioner for a long time, I know that making my way along the emotional process of change happens in well-defined, required stages. Simply saying it’s the end does not make it so. So now, I look at my journey along the curve initially developed by renowned psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross MD, adapted for business to help us understand change and loss.

I've got to fly, high in the sky

I was 18 months old when I traveled on a plane for the first time. I was going from Trinidad to St. Croix.

As a kid, when people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said, "I want to be a flight attendant."

Prospective employers don't want more than words

You want what??

So, this week I started interviewing in earnest. The good news is that I can say applying to jobs on LinkedIn works!

'Cover Letters' also work - if they are short and help the person at the company see precisely why you are the right person for the position #cannedcantgo.

And back to my opening exclamation and the astonishment I experienced: there are many new artifacts that job seekers need these days: writing samples, marketing one-pagers, 30–60–90-section pitches, lists of target companies, published articles, and so on, and so on…

First, prospective employers of leaders want to know that you can reach various audiences in several ways. Then, you must be able to say what you bring to the table quickly and clearly. And they want thought leaders.

So this week, I worked on documenting who I am for prospective employers to see. I saw how much I've changed by pulling out pieces from over the years. I'm proud and happy that I have left joy in my wake and mentored/sponsored so many people. I recalled the good, bad, challenging, sweet, boring, and strengthening times. I went through so many emotions during this exercise. Making the time to sit in this activity was everything.

"Allowing yourself to express your emotions fully is only going to make you stronger," Dr. Sharpe to Aja in Bet on It by Jodie Slaughter.

Any company that engages me will get a self-aware person who can flex, grow, bloom, and cultivate even more leaders.

Blogging Out of My Mind

“Blogging is to writing what extreme sports are to athletics: more free-form, more accident-prone, less formal, more alive. It is, in many ways, writing out loud."
